Regarding the offshore wind power generation project being promoted off the coast of Akita Prefecture, it has been learned from interviews with those involved that the Sendai Regional Taxation Bureau pointed out an underreporting of more than 600 million yen concerning the cooperation money paid by the power generation company to the prefectural fisheries cooperative as compensation for fisheries.

The prefectural fisheries cooperative, which distributed this cooperation fund to fishermen in various regions, has also been accused of failing to report income.

The company accused of underreporting is Akita Offshore Wind Power, a power generation company in Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, established by major trading firms and others.

Offshore wind power projects are underway off the coast of Noshiro City, Akita City, and other areas. Akita Offshore Wind Power has been paying cooperation fees to the prefectural fisheries cooperative as compensation for fishermen, recording these payments as expenses.

However, the Sendai Regional Taxation Bureau determined that this cooperation fee was paid solely to facilitate transactions and should actually be subject to taxation. They pointed out that there was an underreporting of over 600 million yen over five years up to fiscal year 2023.

After the prefectural fisheries cooperative received the cooperation funds, they were distributed to fishermen in each district. The National Tax Agency pointed out that these funds fall under taxable donations, and has imposed additional corporate tax on the prefectural fisheries cooperative for underreporting of over 700 million yen.

Akita Offshore Wind Power admitted to NHKs interview that it is true they were pointed out by the National Tax Agency for underreporting, and stated, It was a clerical error and we have already filed a corrected tax return.
