Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, together with their eldest daughter Princess Aiko, who is visiting Okinawa for the first time, arrived at Naha Airport on the afternoon of the 4th on a special plane. First, they visited Itoman City, the site of the last fierce battle of the Battle of Okinawa, and offered flowers in front of the ossuary at the National Okinawa War Dead Cemetery, where the remains of over 180,000 people are enshrined, to console the spirits of the victims.
Next, they will visit the Cornerstone of Peace, a monument inscribed with the names of over 240,000 war dead, as well as the Peace Memorial Museum, and have a discussion with Okinawa battle survivors and others.
His Majesty the Emperors visit to Okinawa is his first in two years and seven months since he visited with the Empress in the year marking the 50th anniversary of Okinawas reversion to Japan. It is his seventh visit since his first trip in 1987, before becoming Crown Prince.
