According to the results of an investigation by the Board of Audit, it was found that at least approximately 345 million yen was fraudulently received from subsidies for small and medium-sized enterprises, which were established to support challenges in new business fields.
This Business Restructuring Subsidy allocated a total of approximately 1.374 trillion yen by fiscal year 2022, aiming to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to shift their business models or enter new fields.
However, after the Board of Audit of Japan conducted a thorough investigation of approximately 600 million yen, fraudulent activities such as submitting false performance reports and recording ineligible expenses were uncovered. It was confirmed that a total of 20.56 million yen had been fraudulently received by 20 businesses.
For example, a manufacturer in Nagano Prefecture submitted a plan to build a new headquarters under the pretext of starting a new business and received a subsidy of 80 million yen. However, in reality, they did not meet the requirements for receiving the subsidy, and the new headquarters was actually being used for their current business activities.
Furthermore, it was found that the total amount of 24,731,500 yen granted to 108 companies was also used inappropriately, such as assets purchased with the subsidies not being used for new businesses.
In response to this situation, the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency stated, We have taken strict measures, such as demanding the return of subsidies from companies found to have received them in violation of regulations, and emphasized the need to thoroughly implement measures to prevent recurrence in the future.
