It has been revealed that 15 companies operating major hotels in Tokyo shared internal information such as room rates, and the Fair Trade Commission has decided to issue a warning soon, as this could lead to a cartel that unfairly raises prices and may constitute a violation of the Antimonopoly Act, according to interviews with related parties.
警告を受けるのは、都内にある「ホテルニューオータニ」や「帝国ホテル 東京」、「The Okura Tokyo」などの大手ホテルを運営する15社です。
The 15 companies that operate major hotels such as Hotel New Otani, Imperial Hotel Tokyo, and The Okura Tokyo in Tokyo are receiving warnings.
関係者によりますと、15社の営業担当者らは毎月、都内で開かれる会合に参加し、客室の稼働率や平均単価、将来の客室単価の設定方針などの内部情報を共有していました。
According to those involved, sales representatives from 15 companies participated in monthly meetings held in Tokyo, where they shared internal information such as room occupancy rates, average prices, and future room price setting policies.
会合は各ホテルの持ち回りで、数十年前から行われていたとみられ、公正取引委員会の調査では実際に宿泊料金を一斉に引き上げるなどの行為は確認されませんでしたが、共有された他社の情報を参考にして宿泊料金を設定していたホテルもあったということです。
The meetings were held in rotation at each hotel and are believed to have been taking place for several decades. Although the Fair Trade Commissions investigation did not confirm any acts such as simultaneous increases in accommodation fees, it was found that some hotels set their accommodation fees by referring to information shared by other companies.
公正取引委員会は、情報共有が今後、不正に価格を引き上げるカルテルにつながり、独占禁止法違反にあたるおそれがあるとして、再発防止を求める警告を出す方針を固め、各社に通知しました。
The Japan Fair Trade Commission has decided to issue a warning to prevent recurrence, notifying companies that information sharing could potentially lead to a cartel that unfairly raises prices, which may constitute a violation of the Antimonopoly Act.
都内のホテルの宿泊料金はコロナ禍のあと、訪日外国人客の増加などで値上がりが起きていて、宿泊料金が高止まりするなかで公正取引委員会は早期の是正が必要と判断したものとみられます。
It seems that the Fair Trade Commission has determined that early correction is necessary as hotel accommodation prices in Tokyo have risen after the COVID-19 pandemic due to an increase in foreign visitors to Japan, and prices remain high.
