ローマ・カトリック教会のフランシスコ教皇の葬儀は26日、アメリカのトランプ大統領やウクライナのゼレンスキー大統領をはじめとする各国の首脳などが参列する中、執り行われました。

葬儀には世界各地から多くの信者らも集まり、イタリアのメディアは、バチカンのサンピエトロ大聖堂の周辺や埋葬先のローマ市内の大聖堂までの沿道には、あわせておよそ40万人が集まったと伝えています。
A large number of believers from around the world also gathered for the funeral, and Italian media reported that about 400,000 people gathered along the roads around St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican and the cathedral in Rome where the burial took place.
今後は、教皇に次ぐ地位にある枢機卿たちによって、新しい教皇を選ぶ選挙「コンクラーベ」が行われることになります。
From now on, a conclave—an election to choose a new pope—will be held by the cardinals, who hold the highest rank after the pope.
「コンクラーベ」は80歳未満の枢機卿たちが投票できる選挙で、原則として教皇の死去から15日から20日後までに始まることになっています。
Conclave is an election in which cardinals under the age of 80 can vote, and in principle, it is to begin within 15 to 20 days after the popes death.
今回は5月上旬にも始まる可能性が高いという見方が出ていますが、枢機卿が集合していれば開始を早めることも可能で、正式な日程は近く、枢機卿たちが会議で決定します。

欧米のメディアは、次の教皇の有力候補としてフランシスコ教皇の側近のピエトロ・パロリン枢機卿や、教皇の特使としてロシアやウクライナを訪問したマッテオ・マリア・ズッピ枢機卿、それに教皇に選ばれればアジア出身者として初めてとなるフィリピン出身のルイス・アントニオ・タグレ枢機卿など複数の人物の名前をあげています。
Western media have listed several names as strong candidates for the next pope, including Cardinal Pietro Parolin, a close aide to Pope Francis; Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, who visited Russia and Ukraine as the popes envoy; and Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines, who would be the first Asian to be chosen as pope.
投票はバチカンのシスティーナ礼拝堂で行われ、新しい教皇が決まると礼拝堂の煙突から白い煙があがり鐘が鳴らされることになっていて、選挙の行方が注目されます。
Voting takes place in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, and when a new pope is chosen, white smoke rises from the chapels chimney and bells are rung, so the outcome of the election draws much attention.
