Sterilization treatment prohibited in 30% of French mineral water

French media reported on the 30th, based on a government investigation report, that approximately 30% of mineral water brands in France undergo sterilization and other treatments that should only be applied to tap water.

Food giant Nestlé has admitted to using ultraviolet light and activated carbon filters in its major brands, including Perrier and Vittel, ahead of reports in the daily newspaper Le Monde and public radio France.

　同紙どうしによると、社会問題監察総局しゃかいもんだいかんさつそうきょく（IGAS）が2022年ねん7月がつにまとめた報告書ほうこくしょで、「30％近ちかいブランド」で国内こくないの規定きていに反はんする処理しょりが行おこなわれており、しかも「30％というのは少すくななく見積みつもった数字すうじ」だと指摘してきしていた

According to the paper, a report compiled by the Inspector General for Social Affairs (IGAS) in July 2022 found that ”nearly 30% of brands” were processed in violation of domestic regulations, and that ”30% is far from a small number. ”These are estimated numbers,” he said.

　欧州連合おうしゅうれんごう（EU）の指令しれいに基もとづいたフランスの法律ほうりつでは、ミネラルウオーターはボトル詰づめ以前いぜんに自然しぜんに良質りょうしつであるという観点かんてんから、殺菌処理さっきんしょりを施ほどこさないことが義務付ぎむづけられている

French law based on European Union (EU) directives requires that mineral water not be sterilized prior to bottling, in order to maintain its naturally high quality.

”No health risks have been identified so far related to the quality of bottled water,” a government source told AFP.

The same government source said that IGAS launched the investigation after Nestlé admitted to authorities in 2021 that it was conducting processing that violates regulations.
