Kumamoto Prefecture: Junior high school students pick lotus roots in the mud
熊本県天草市で7日、中学生14人がれんこんをとる勉強をしました
On the 7th in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, 14 junior high school students learned how to pick lotus roots.
We planned this event because we wanted people to learn about how lotus root farmers produce their food.
The junior high school students entered the field wearing waterproof chest-length pants.
They turned on the water from the hose and looked for lotus root in the mud.

There was also a lotus root about 1 meter long, and everyone was happy.
A junior high school student said, ”I couldn’t move my legs because of the mud, and I didn’t know where the lotus root was, but I’m glad I was able to pick up a big lotus root.”
農家の人は「食べ物を作る大変さを知ることができたと思います
A farmer said, ”I think I was able to understand how difficult it is to make food.
Since lotus roots are delicious, I want you to eat lots of them.”
