A French court ruled on the 19th that an African mask sold by an elderly couple to an antique dealer for 150 euros (approximately 24,000 yen) was sold at auction for 4.2 million euros (approximately 660 million yen). In a lawsuit seeking to cancel the sale, the lawsuit was dismissed, citing the couple’s imprudence.

In September 2021, a couple in their 80s sold the masks, which had been stored in a separate house in the south of France, along with spears and circumcision knives made in Africa.

These were owned by an ancestor who served as a governor in Africa, and were not considered to be of much value.

The couple sold the mask for 150 euros.

しかし、2022年ねん3月がつに南仏なんふつモンペリエ（Montpellier）で行おこなわれた競売きょうばいでは420万まんユーロで落札らくさつされた

However, it was sold for 4.2 million euros at an auction in Montpellier, southern France, in March 2022.

落札者らくさつしゃの身元みもとは明あきらかになっていない

The identity of the winning bidder has not been revealed.

　競売会社きょうばいがいしゃは、仮面かめんは「19世紀せいきにガボンの少数民族しょうすうみんぞくファン（Fang）の秘密結社ひみつけっしゃが儀式ぎしきで使つかっていた極きわめて希少きしょうなもの」で、同様どうようの物ものは10個こほどしか現存げんそんしていないとしている

The auction house says the mask is ”an extremely rare item that was used in rituals by the Fang ethnic group in Gabon in the 19th century,” and that there are only about 10 similar items in existence.

When the couple found out about the auction, they immediately sued to have the sale canceled for 150 euros, alleging that there had been an ”error in appraisal.”

Additionally, the antique dealer who bought the mask claimed that he was ``aware of the mask’s true value’’ from the beginning.

However, the court pointed out that the couple made no effort to find out the appraised value of the mask before selling it.

夫婦ふうふの「言いい訳わけできない怠慢たいまんと軽率けいそつさ」が原因げんいんだとの判断はんだんを下したした

The judge ruled that the couple’s ”inexcusable negligence and thoughtlessness” was the cause.

　また、骨董商自身こっとうしょうじしんもアフリカ美術びじゅつの専門家せんもんかではなく、夫婦ふうふを欺あざむいた訳わけではないとしている

Additionally, the antique dealer himself is not an expert on African art, and says he did not deceive the couple.

　骨董商こっとうしょうは、競売きょうばいの開始価格かいしかかくと同おなじ30万まんユーロ（約やく4700万円まんえん）を示談金じだんきんとして提示ていじしたが、夫婦ふうふの子こどもらが訴訟そしょうを優先ゆうせんするとして、拒否きょひしていた

The antique dealer offered 300,000 euros (approximately 47 million yen), the same as the starting price of the auction, as a settlement sum, but the couple’s children refused, saying they would prioritize litigation.

A lawyer representing the couple said they are considering an appeal.

　仮面かめんをめぐっては、ガボン政府せいふも競売きょうばいの取とり消けしと仮面かめんの返還へんかんを求もとめ訴うったえていたが、裁判所さいばんしょはこの訴うったえも退のけた
