Asahi Shimbun Co., Ltd. Representative Director and CEO: Masaru Kakuta has decided to hold an exhibition focusing on Johannes Vermeers masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring at the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art in August 2026.

This work is known as the most famous portrait of a girl in the world, and will be exhibited in Japan for the first time in 14 years since the Mauritshuis Museum Exhibition held in Tokyo and Kobe from 2012 to 2013.

In principle, the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, Netherlands, which owns Girl with a Pearl Earring, does not lend this work outside the museum.

Therefore, this may be the last opportunity to see this masterpiece in Japan.

The detailed information about the exhibition is scheduled to be announced at the end of February.

This work was painted around 1665 by Vermeer 1632–1675, a painter who represents 17th-century Dutch painting, and it beautifully demonstrates his outstanding ability to depict light.

Especially, the girls softly contoured face, her moist-looking lips, and the shimmering luster of the pearl are results of Vermeers characteristically delicate technique.

Furthermore, the vibrant blue of the turban is painted with a pigment made from the rare gemstone lapis lazuli, which is also known as Vermeer Blue.

Director of the Mauritshuis Museum, Martine Gosselink, stated, Every year, many Japanese tourists visit our museum and admire Vermeers Girl with a Pearl Earring. This time, the Girl coming to Japan will likely be the last special opportunity for us to present her to everyone in Japan.
