Ozeki Onosato, who is challenging for promotion to yokozuna at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, has won his fourth championship, and his second in a row.

Ōnosato took a big step toward promotion to yokozuna after winning two consecutive tournaments as an ōzeki.

After the twelfth day of the Summer Tournament, Oonosato, who is aiming for promotion to Yokozuna, extended his winning streak from the opening day to twelve. Meanwhile, five wrestlers, including Yokozuna Hoshoryu, are trailing with three losses, three wins behind.

On the 23rd day of the 13th, Oonosato faced Ozeki Kotonosakura. At the initial charge, he locked both arms and moved forward, quickly getting his favorite right-hand inside grip while also using his left, launching a swift attack. He won by yorikiri frontal force-out, securing his 13th victory and clinching his fourth championship before the final day.

Ōnosato has won the championship for two consecutive tournaments as an ōzeki.

The Yokozuna Deliberation Council has an internal rule that states the conditions for recommending a wrestler for promotion to yokozuna as winning two consecutive tournaments as an ōzeki or achieving an equivalent record. Since the establishment of the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, there has never been a case where a wrestler who won two consecutive tournaments was not promoted to yokozuna, so Ōnosato has made significant progress toward promotion to yokozuna after this tournament.

It will be the first time in 10 years that the championship will be decided on Day 13, since Yokozuna Hakuho at the January tournament in 2015 Heisei 27.

Ōnosato racked up wins this tournament, overwhelming his opponents with sheer power from the very first day.

There were moments when he used his signature right-hand thrusts, but what really stood out was his overwhelming pressure—making use of his large 1.92-meter, 191-kilogram body, he never backed down even when pushed, and kept attacking forward.

And then, with 13 straight wins from the first day without a single loss, he won two consecutive tournaments as an Ozeki, just over two years after entering the sport, bringing him significantly closer to promotion to Yokozuna.
