Long, long ago, there were kappa living in various places all over Japan.

This kappa would damage the fields and challenge the villagers to sumo matches, and when it won, it would take various things from them.

結びました。
One day, while a man from the village was washing his cow in the river, a kappa tied the cows tail with a string.

The man calmed the cow and drank alcohol by the river.

Kappa became interested in alcohol.

I drank the sake from the gourd when the man wasnt looking.

結びました。
The man poured the water out of the kappas dish on its head and tied it up with a string.

騒いでいましたが、
夕方に
なると
元気がなくなりました。
The kappa was making a fuss all day on a hot day, but by evening, he had lost his energy.

人は、
夜遅く、
河童のひもを
切ってやりました。
The man cut the kappa’s rope late at night.

もう人間に
悪いことをしないことと、
田んぼの
草を
取る
手伝いをすることを
約束させました。
And then, I made him promise not to do anything bad to humans anymore and to help weed the rice fields.

河童は
歌を
歌いながら
田んぼの
草を
取りました。
The next day, the kappa weeded the rice field while singing a song.

男の
人と
一緒に
川に
行くと「
川の
中で
一番大きな
石を
川の
そばに
置きます。
And then, when you go to the river with the man, he says, Ill place the biggest stone in the river by the riverside.

砂に
なるまで、
人間に
悪いことをしません」と
言って、
沼に
帰って
行きました。
I wont do anything bad to humans until this stone turns into sand, it said, and went back to the swamp.

村の
人たちは
河童の
話をしなくなりました。
After that, the villagers stopped talking about the kappa.
たちが
どこに
行ったのか、
誰も
知りません。
No one knows where the kappas have gone.
