京都の

母親が
住んでいました。
At Eifukuji Temple in Kyoto, there lived a young monk named Zenkō and his elderly mother.

病気になりました。
My mother has become seriously ill.
は「タコが
食べたい」と
言いました。
My mother said, I want to eat octopus.

仏教では
生き
物を
殺すことを
禁止しています。
However, in Buddhism, killing living beings is prohibited.
さんの
善光は、タコを
食べさせることができませんでした。
The monk Zenkou was unable to serve octopus.

母の
命にはかえられない」と
考えて、タコを
買いに
行きました。
Zenkou thought, Nothing is more important than my mothers life, and went to buy an octopus.

坊さんの
姿では
買いにくいだろうと
言って、
善光に
女性の
服を
着せて、タコを
持たせました。
The fishmonger said it would be difficult for him to buy in a monks attire, so he dressed Zenkou in womens clothing and gave him an octopus to hold.

急いで
お寺に
帰りました。
Zenko hurried back to the temple.
の
近くにいる
人に、タコのにおいがわかってしまいました。
People near the temple could smell the scent of octopus.
タコを
入れた
桶のふたを
開けられると、
お経の
巻物が
入っていました。
When the lid of the bucket with the octopus was opened, there was a scroll of sutras inside.
は
不思議に
思いましたが、
仏様がしてくれたことだと
思いました。
Zenko thought it was strange, but believed it was something the Buddha had done for him.
の
母親は、タコを
食べて
元気になりました。
Zenkos mother ate octopus and regained her strength.
の
薬師如来は、
今も「タコ
薬師」と
呼ばれて、
多くの
人がお
参りに
来ています。
The Yakushi Nyorai at the temple is still called Tako Yakushi, and many people come to visit.
