Prime Minister Ishiba received a report on ministerial negotiations with Treasury Secretary Bessent and others from Minister for Economic Revitalization Akazawa, who returned from the United States, at the Prime Minister’s official residence on the 1st. The government plans to develop a negotiation strategy with a possible agreement between Prime Minister Ishiba and President Trump in mind, coinciding with the G7 Summit—the meeting of leaders from the seven major countries—to be held in Canada in the middle of this month. There is also a proposal to hold a summit meeting in the United States just before the summit.

Minister Akazawa was planning to visit France from the 3rd to attend an international conference and was seeking to negotiate with American cabinet members on site, but since coordination with the other party could not be arranged, he has decided not to attend.

For this reason, they are considering visiting the United States again later this week to hold negotiations, and it is expected that coordination will take place between the governments.

According to government officials, as negotiations progress, the points that the American side places importance on are becoming clearer, while Japan has not yet received any assurances regarding the review of a series of measures it is seeking. The government plans to further analyze the other party’s claims and hopes to find common ground for compromise.
