Since the coup four years ago, fighting has continued in Myanmar. The military carried out an airstrike on a school run by opposing pro-democracy forces, and so far, more than 20 people, including children and students, have been killed.

According to Myanmars independent media, on the 12th, the military carried out an airstrike on a school in Sagaing Region in the northwest, resulting in the deaths of 22 people, including 20 children and students and 2 teachers, and injuring more than 50 others.

The school was operated by the NUG National Unity Government, which was established by pro-democracy forces, and children from elementary to high school attended.

A member of the pro-democracy forces told NHK, There are still people whose whereabouts are unknown, and the number of victims may increase further, strongly criticizing the militarys response.

On the other hand, the military has denied the airstrike through state-run media, calling it fake news and similar statements.

Since the coup four years ago, the military, which holds power, announced that it would temporarily halt fighting with pro-democracy forces in order to prioritize relief efforts after the major earthquake that occurred this March, and later announced that the ceasefire period would be extended until the 31st of this month.

However, even after the ceasefire was announced, it appears that airstrikes and shelling by the military are continuing in the area, including the disaster-affected regions, rendering the ceasefire a mere formality.
