Around 3 p.m. on the 14th, the fire department received a report in Inuyama City that something like an aircraft had crashed into a pond.

The crashed aircraft was a Japan Air Self-Defense Force T-4 trainer with two people on board. According to the Ministry of Defense, shortly after taking off from Komaki Air Base in Aichi Prefecture for Nyutabaru Air Base in Miyazaki Prefecture just after 3:00 p.m., its flight path disappeared from radar while flying near Inuyama City.

According to the police, the crash occurred at Iruka Pond, an agricultural reservoir located a little over 5 kilometers southeast of Meitetsu Inuyama Station, and a little over 10 kilometers northeast of Komaki Air Base.

So far, there have been no reports of injuries in the surrounding area, and the aircraft and crew have not been found.

A woman who works at a nearby office said, I heard a really loud bang, like a thunderbolt struck.

After that, the sirens of police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances have been sounding constantly, they said.

Police, fire departments, and the Self-Defense Forces are carrying out rescue operations and checking the situation.

The camera installed by NHK at the prefectural Nagoya Airport captured an aircraft, believed to be a T-4 trainer, taking off from the Air Self-Defense Force Komaki Base shortly after 3 p.m.

Police and the Self-Defense Forces are investigating the flight status of the crashed aircraft.

In the vicinity, there was a boom sound, like thunder. An employee at a hotel on the shore of Iruka Lake said, A little while ago, I heard a boom and wondered what it was.

After that, I heard the sound of a police car driving by and it seemed noisy outside, but from here I couldnt see what was happening, they said.

Also, at the nearby Inuyama Ikeno Simple Post Office, people inside were talking about how they heard an incredibly loud noise like a lightning strike, and thought it was strange since the weather was nice.

After a while, I heard the sound of police cars and fire trucks passing by.

A man who runs a boat rental shop near Iruka Pond said, I happened to be out, and when I came back, I heard that there had been a crash.

I was worried that the customers who rented the boats might have been involved, but they all came back safely, he said.

According to Akihisa Yuda, the director of the open-air museum Meiji Mura adjacent to Iruka Pond, there was no damage to guests or buildings.

At the time, Director Yuda said, We were having a meeting at the office when we heard a crackling sound like an explosion.

Several customers told me, It sounded like a plane crashed into the pond, so I reported it immediately.

There was a smell like oil filling the facility, and when a staff member went to check the pond, they said, I couldnt tell what it was, but something was floating on the surface of the water.

At the time, there were many customers inside the facility, and it was said, Many of the customers looked surprised, so we immediately checked for safety, but there was no damage to the customers or the building.

Accidents involving Self-Defense Force aircraft: In recent years, there have been a series of accidents involving Self-Defense Force aircraft.

In April last year, two SH60 patrol helicopters of the Maritime Self-Defense Force collided and crashed during night training off Torishima in the Izu Islands, resulting in the deaths of eight crew members.
