The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested three employees for luring a man they met on a dating app to a restaurant in Shibuya, Tokyo, and forcing him to pay 1.1 million yen in cash and other charges as part of a scam.

It has been confirmed that there have been cases in which a man with disabilities was victimized through the misuse of a matching app for people with disabilities, and the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the actual situation of illegal operations.

The three people arrested are Sota Sako 22, an employee at a bar in Shibuya, Tokyo, Kotaro Shibata 21, and Rina Sugawara 24.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, in January of this year, they allegedly lured a man in his 20s whom they met through a dating app to their restaurant, made him pay 1.1 million yen in cash under the pretext of fees and compensation, and also made him purchase items such as necklaces worth about 750,000 yen with his credit card, in violation of the citys ordinance against fraudulent billing.

Sugawara, the suspect, would lure people in by hiding the fact that he was an employee and saying things like “There’s a place I want to go.” So far, there have been 54 male victims, with total damages estimated at around 80 million yen.

Some people have reportedly exploited dating apps for people with disabilities by luring individuals with mobility impairments and charging them exorbitant fees. If they couldnt pay, there were cases where they were confined in a sauna facility overnight and then forced to borrow money from consumer lenders the next day.

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the division of roles within the group and the actual situation of their illegal operations.

They have not revealed the pleas of the three people.
