昔話です。
This is a folktale passed down in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

秋吉という
所は
岩が多くて
川もなく、
村の
人たちは
岩の
間から
出る
水を
使っていました。
In the past, Akiyoshi was a place with many rocks and no rivers, so the villagers used water that came out from between the rocks.

米をつくることができなくて、
そば団子を
食べていました。
The villagers couldnt grow rice, so they ate buckwheat dumplings.

お金持ちの
人がいました。
There was a wealthy person in the village.

人たちは、
食べる
そば以外は
この人に
渡していました。
The villagers gave everything except the soba they ate to this person.

そばが
入った
俵がありました。
There were bales filled with lots of soba noodles in the rich person’s house.

村には
3日3晩も
雨が
降り
続きました。
One summer day, it rained in the village for three days and three nights straight.

村の
人たちは
お金持ちの
家に
行くことができませんでした。
Even after the rain stopped, the villagers still couldnt go to the rich persons house.
がぬかるんでいたからです。
Because the road was muddy.
ちは、
村の
人たちに「
早く
水を
運んで
来なさい」と
言いました。
The rich man said to the villagers, Hurry up and bring the water.

人たちは「
道がぬかるんでいるので
行くことができません」と
言いました。
The villagers said, We cant go because the road is muddy.
ちは、
家の
人に
そばの
俵を
たくさん道に
並べるように
言いました。
The rich man told his family to line up many sacks of soba along the road.

人たちが
そばの
俵の
上を
歩いて
水を
運ぶようにしたのです。
The villagers started walking on top of the bundles of buckwheat to carry water.

日の
朝、
太陽が
出て、
そばの
俵に
光が
当たると、
俵はなくなってしまいました。
The next morning, when the sun came out and shone on the straw bag nearby, the bag had disappeared.

1つ1つがちょうに
変わっていました。
Each rice bale had turned into a butterfly.
ちょうは
空を
飛んで、
どこかへ
行ってしまいました。
The butterfly flew away into the sky and disappeared somewhere.
の
人たちは「
食べ
物を
大切にしなかったから、
罰が
当たったのだろう」と
話しました。
The villagers said, You were probably punished because you didnt value food.
すると、
お金持ちの
家はなくなって、
森になりました。
After a while, the rich persons house disappeared and it became a forest.
の
人たちは
この森を「ちょうじゃがもり」と
呼びました。
The villagers called this forest Chojaga Forest.
