According to Wakayama Prefecture, Governor Kishimoto was found collapsed in the bedroom of the governors residence in Wakayama City shortly after 10 a.m. on the 14th and was taken to the Japanese Red Cross Wakayama Medical Center.

He was in a state of unconsciousness and was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, but passed away around 9:30 a.m. on the 15th due to septic shock.

Governor Kishimoto, after serving as a section chief in the Ministry of Finance, was first elected in the House of Representatives election in 2009 Heisei 21 and was elected five consecutive times.

During this time, he served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Economy, Trade and Industry in the Democratic Party administration, and three years ago, he ran for the Wakayama Prefecture gubernatorial election and was elected for the first time.

Following the death of Governor Kishimoto, it has been announced that Izumi Miyazaki, the Deputy Governor, will serve as the acting governor of Wakayama Prefecture starting from the 15th.

The Wakayama Prefecture gubernatorial election will be held within 50 days from the day following the notification of the death to the prefectural election management committee.
