After 12:30 p.m. on the 24th, a passenger car driving on a road atop the embankment of the Tenryu River in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, veered off the road, fell down a slope, and crashed into a water gate. All four male passengers, aged 19 and 20, died.

According to the prefecture, the four are second-year students at a prefectural vocational training facility in the city. They attended classes on the morning of the 24th, and the accident occurred during their lunch break.

According to the police, the road is a city street about 5 meters wide without a center line, and tire marks leading toward the water gate were left at the scene.

The police believe that for some reason the driver made a mistake in operating the vehicle, and they are investigating details of the accident, such as how fast the car was going at the time.

A man in his 70s who passes by the road every morning said, All the victims were young people, so I think their parents and school officials must be in shock.

The vocational school attended by the four students held a briefing session for parents on the night of the 24th, explaining the circumstances of the accident and other details.

After the briefing session, Principal Hirokazu Ayuzawa responded to interviews from various news outlets, saying, I am extremely shocked that the student involved in the accident was from our school.
