It has been revealed that the person in charge in Yokohama City neglected the procedures such as contacting relatives for the bodies of eight people with no kin, resulting in them not being cremated for up to nine months.
横浜市は、警察や病院から身寄りのない遺体を引き継いだ場合、戸籍などから親族を探して引き取るか確認し、引き取り手がなければ市が火葬の手続きをしています。
<br>When Yokohama City takes over unclaimed bodies from the police or hospitals, they look for relatives through family registers and confirm if they will claim the body. If there is no one to claim it, the city handles the cremation process.
市によりますと、港南区役所の40代の係長が、去年までの2年間にこうした手続きを怠った結果、身寄りのない8人を3か月から9か月、火葬されないままにしていたということです。
According to the city, a section chief in their 40s at the Konan Ward Office neglected these procedures over a two-year period until last year, resulting in eight people without relatives being left uncremated for three to nine months.
ことし1月、葬祭業者から区への問い合わせで発覚し、係長は、「1人の手続きに苦慮し、ほかの7人の処理を進められなかった」と話しているということです。

いずれも先月までに必要な手続きを終えて火葬され、市は葬祭業者におよそ800万円の保管料を追加で支払いました。
