Regarding the House of Councillors election this summer, the Liberal Democratic Party, together with its coalition partner Komeito, aims to maintain a majority of seats, and plans to mobilize the entire party to expand its support.

In last years House of Representatives election, the Liberal Democratic Party lost 56 seats compared to before the election and secured only 191 seats. Even combined with the Komeito Party, they failed to reach a majority, resulting in a minority ruling party situation.

Regarding the Upper House election this summer, Prime Minister Ishiba said, We are facing an extremely tough election, but I want to win at all costs, not for the Liberal Democratic Party, but for Japan and for the next generation. He expressed his intention to maintain a majority in the Upper House, including the non-contested seats held by the ruling parties.

We plan to field candidates in all 45 electoral districts nationwide, and we are still considering candidates for Osaka and a second candidate for Tokyo.

We are also making adjustments to field about the same number of candidates for the proportional representation as last time, three years ago, when 33 people ran.

The Komeito Party has agreed, in principle, to cooperate in elections by endorsing each others candidates in their respective electoral districts.

For the upcoming House of Councillors election, activities during the long holiday period will be important. Therefore, each prefectural chapter has been asked to have prospective candidates, together with House of Representatives single-member district branch chiefs and others, appeal for the party’s policies, as part of an all-out effort by the party to expand its support.
