North Korea announced that General Secretary Kim Jong-un had decided to send troops to support the Russian militarys operation to recapture Russias western Kursk region, which had been attacked across the border by Ukrainian forces.

This is the first time North Korea has officially acknowledged sending troops to Russia.

This was announced by the Central Military Commission of the Workers Party of Korea through state media on the 28th.

In this statement, it is acknowledged that North Korean troops participated in combat in Russias western Kursk region, where the Ukrainian military had been conducting cross-border attacks, and it is emphasized that they made a significant contribution to the liberation of Russian territory.

Additionally, regarding the dispatch of troops to Russia, it is stated that General Secretary Kim Jong Un decided to participate in the war and notified the Russian side based on the analysis and judgment that the situation at that time corresponded to the invocation of Article 4 of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty concluded between the two countries, indicating that the decision was made based on the provision stipulating military assistance to one country in the event of an emergency.

Also, General Secretary Kim acknowledged that there have been casualties among the troops, stating, A monument honoring the feats of battle will soon be erected in our capital, and flowers will be laid before the gravestones of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives.

Before North Korea’s announcement, Russian military Chief of Staff Gerasimov stated on the 26th that the Kursk region had been recaptured and mentioned that North Korean troops had participated in the fighting, but this is the first time North Korea has officially acknowledged sending troops to Russia.
