The summit meeting between Prime Minister Ishiba and Vietnamese Prime Minister Chinh is being held at the Prime Ministers Office in Hanoi from just before 11 a.m. Japan time.

In this context, Prime Minister Ishiba said, I want to work toward realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific and strengthening the relationship between Japan and Vietnam.

I would also like to discuss the international situation, the world economy, and the nature of global trade, he said.

In the meeting, the two leaders are expected to exchange views on issues such as the impact of U.S. tariff measures and China’s countermeasures on the global economy, and confirm their commitment to maintaining and strengthening a multilateral free trade system.

It is also believed that they are exchanging views on regional situations such as China, which is intensifying its maritime expansion in the East and South China Seas; North Korea, which continues to develop nuclear weapons and missiles and is deepening military cooperation with Russia; and Myanmar, where the military holds power and a major earthquake recently occurred.

And they are expected to agree to work closely together in addressing regional issues and to advance cooperation in the field of security.

Furthermore, it is believed that they are also discussing strengthening cooperation in the economic field, such as further infrastructure development and efforts toward decarbonization. After the meeting, the two leaders are scheduled to explain the outcomes and other matters at a joint press conference.

Prime Minister Ishiba, together with his wife Kako, visited Ba Dinh Square in the capital city of Hanoi on the morning of the 28th, where President Ho Chi Minh declared independence from colonial rule in 1945.
