Due to a series of incidents where people have registered on matching apps using false personal information and caused trouble, a matching app operating company in Tokyo will soon begin an initiative to strengthen identity verification by utilizing information obtained from the My Number Card that proves a person is single.

According to the Digital Agency, this is the first time such an initiative has been undertaken.

Regarding matching apps, there has been a rapid increase in cases where they are misused for romance scams, in which people are made to develop romantic feelings and then have money fraudulently taken from them. There are also frequent cases of people registering with false personal information, leading to various problems, so strengthening identity verification systems has become an important issue.

Amidst this situation, a Tokyo-based company that operates the matching app Tapple will soon begin an initiative to strengthen identity verification by utilizing information obtained from My Number cards that proves a person is single.

Since August last year, it has become possible to obtain information about marital status using the My Number Card. For users who wish to use this service, the company confirms through Mynaportal whether information such as date of birth and gender matches the registered information, and then obtains information confirming that the user is currently single, which is then displayed on their profile page.

As an official certificate proving single status, there is a Certificate of Being Single issued by the municipality of ones registered domicile, and when using services such as marriage agencies, submission of this certificate was required. However, with private matching apps, the terms and conditions only stated that users must be single, so there have been cases where married people pretended to be single and caused trouble.

According to the Digital Agency, some matching apps are already using My Number cards for identity verification, but this is the first time that efforts are being made to confirm a persons single status using information about marital relationships.

At the company, they said, We want to strengthen our measures against fraudulent users such as romance scammers and married people, and provide a safe environment for users.
