Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan over a terrorist incident that occurred in the disputed Kashmir region, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio held consecutive phone talks with both countries, urging both sides to work towards easing the tensions.
インドとパキスタンが領有権を争うカシミール地方のうち、インド政府が直轄地とするジャム・カシミールで先月22日、観光客ら26人が死亡したテロ事件をめぐり、インド政府はパキスタン政府の関与を主張し、対抗措置を相次いで打ち出したほか、報復攻撃も辞さない姿勢を示しています。
On the 22nd of last month, in Jammu and Kashmir—a region directly administered by the Indian government within the Kashmir area disputed by India and Pakistan—a terrorist attack resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists. The Indian government has asserted that the Pakistani government was involved, has announced a series of countermeasures, and is showing a stance of not ruling out retaliatory attacks.
これに対し、パキスタン側はテロへの関与を否定し、中立的な調査を求めるとともにインドへの対抗措置を打ち出しています。
In response, the Pakistani side has denied involvement in terrorism, called for a neutral investigation, and announced countermeasures against India.
両国間の緊張が高まる中、アメリカ国務省は30日、声明を発表し、ルビオ長官がインドのジャイシャンカル外相、そして、パキスタンのシャリフ首相と相次いで電話会談したことを明らかにしました。
Amid rising tensions between the two countries, the U.S. State Department announced in a statement on the 30th that Secretary Rubio held consecutive telephone talks with Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif.
声明によりますとルビオ長官は、緊張の緩和と南アジアの平和と安定のために、インドとパキスタンの双方が取り組むよう促したということです。
According to the statement, Secretary Rubio urged both India and Pakistan to make efforts for easing tensions and for peace and stability in South Asia.
また、パキスタン政府も声明を発表し、会談の中で、シャリフ首相は中立的な調査の必要性を指摘したうえで「アメリカに対し、インドが責任ある行動をとるよう、強く促すことを求めた」としています。
Additionally, the Pakistani government also issued a statement, saying that during the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif pointed out the need for a neutral investigation and strongly requested the United States to urge India to act responsibly.
今後、インド側がパキスタン側への越境攻撃に踏み切るかどうかが最大の焦点で、アメリカとしても核保有国どうしの緊張の高まりに懸念を強めています。
The main focus now is whether India will go ahead with cross-border attacks against Pakistan, and the United States is increasingly concerned about the rising tensions between these two nuclear-armed countries.
