Ponds turn pink in Maui, Hawaii, perhaps due to drought

A pond in central Maui, Hawaii has turned a bright pink color, and experts are calling for caution as it appears to be caused by microorganisms.
The discoloration is thought to be the result of drought.
At the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge in Maui, Hawaii, the water in the pond has turned bright pink since the 30th of last month, and staff are continuing to monitor it.
According to local media, analysis of water samples at the University of Hawaii revealed that a microorganism called halobacteria, which thrives in water with high salt concentration, may be the cause.
Drought has continued on Maui since the wildfires in August, and it is thought that the water in the ponds has evaporated and the salt concentration has increased.
Experts urge people not to go into ponds or drink the water.
