Crowdfunding aimed at renovating Shinkansen 0 series vehicles in Akishima, Tokyo
Akishima City in Tokyo is raising money through crowdfunding to renovate the 0-series Shinkansen, which is known for its ”dangohana” library, and to make it a new local landmark.

For 28 years from 1992, the 0-series Shinkansen train cars in Tsutsujigaoka Park in Akishima City were nicknamed the ”Shinkansen Library” as a branch of the city’s library, but three years ago another library was built nearby. The car was closed due to some reasons, and now there are holes in the car body due to paint fading and rust.
In response to this deterioration and the voices of citizens asking for it to be cleaned up, Akishima City started a crowdfunding campaign last month to raise funds for the renovation of this vehicle in order to make it a new landmark.
The total cost of the project is approximately 65 million yen, including the cost of installing a roof on top of the vehicle, of which they hope to raise 15 million yen.
Applications are accepted at city halls, financial institutions, and the hometown tax donation intermediary website, and are valid until March of the following year.
Jun Murayama, director of the Akishima City Planning and Policy Division, said, ``We would like to move forward with the project by reaching the target amount as much as possible with the cooperation of many people.
”I want the clean Shinkansen to become popular as a landmark of the city and be used as a space for relaxation.”
