昔むかしある所ところに、怠なまけ者もので大酒飲おおざけのみの男おとこがいた

ある夜よるのこと

One night

父親ちちおやのもとに、死しんだはずの息子むすこが姿すがたを現あらわした

A son who was supposed to be dead appeared before his father.

息子むすこが家いえを出でて、いずこかへ歩あるいて行いくので、父親ちちおやはその後ごについて行いく事ことにした

The son left the house and walked somewhere, so the father decided to follow him.

息子むすこがとある寺てらの中なかに入はいって行いく

父親ちちおやは、そっと中なかの様子ようすを窺うかがってみた

The father quietly took a look inside.

寺てらの中なかでは死人達しにんたちが宴会えんかいをしているようであった

死人達しにんたちは、家族かぞくの者ものが供そなえてくれたお供そなえ物ものを食たべているらしく、どの死人しにんも美味おいしそうにお供そなえ物ものを食たべたり、酒さけを飲のんだりと賑にぎやかで、宴会えんかいは和気藹わきあいあい々としていた

その宴うたげの中なかには息子むすこの姿すがたもあったが、なぜか息子むすこは宴うたげの中なかに入はいろうとせず、部屋へやの中なかでうずくまり、ただ、他ほかの者もののドンチャン騒さわぎを聞きくまいとするかのように、背せを向むけていた

どうやらあの世よの世界せかいでは、死者ししゃは身内みうちや友人ゆうじんなどが供そなえてくれた食たべ物ものは食たべることが出来できるのだが、他ほかの者ものに供そなえられた食たべ物ものは食たべることが出来できないらしかった

そのため、息子むすこは他ほかの死者ししゃから供そなえ物ものを分わけてもらう事ことができず、また、彼かれの父親ちちおやは飲のんだくれてばかりで、供そなえ物ものの一ひとつもあげてこなかったから、息子むすこはあの世よで食たべるものはおろか、飲のむ水みずにすら困こまり果はてて、苦くるしんでいたのであった

As a result, the son was not able to receive offerings from other dead people, and since his father only gave them drinks and never gave them any offerings, the son was unable to drink anything, let alone eat in the afterlife. He was in pain, unable to even find water.

我わが子こがそんなに辛つらい思おもいをしていると知しった父親ちちおやは、涙なみだを流ながして今いままでの自みずからの行おこないを悔くいた

When the father learned that his child was suffering so much, he shed tears and regretted his actions up until now.

それから父親ちちおやは改心かいしんし、あの世よで我わが子こが食たべるものに困こまらぬよう、飲のむ水みずに困こまらぬよう、毎日水まいにちみずや供そなえ物ものを欠かかさず行おこなうようになったということだ

After that, the father changed his mind and began to make sure to provide water and offerings every day so that his child would not have to worry about food or water to drink in the afterlife.
