The Story of the 3 Cup Old Lady
Long ago, in Mie prefecture, there was a big village called yamanohira and a small village called Osakabe.
The people of Osakabe village, took the wood from the mountain and some barley and millet to yamanohira to exchange for salt and fish and other things.
The mountain path was steep and dangerous.
In Osakabe Forest there lived an old woman.
one time, the old woman found a secret path to yamanohira.
Everyday, the old woman took the path to yamanohira to exchange delicious food
one day, an old neighbor saw the old woman come from the hole.
The old woman received a cup of millet to use the secret path.
Another villager alao paid 1 cup of millet to usw the path.
The old woman received 2 cups.
Among the villagers, there were some people who would use the secret path wihtout paying.
The old woman received 3 cups the sat and watched the secret path.
As for the villagers, some would not pay 3 cups to use the secret path.
The old woman’s hair was wild, only her eyes shined, she became like anmonster.
The villagers began calling her 3 cups hag.
Some years later, the villagers finally began difficult construction on a shortcut to the village.
As for the villagers, they finally had a safe path, the old woman still kept watch in front of her hole.
