Mount Ontake eruption 11 years ago, urging family members and climbers to take safety measures
Before September 27th marks the 11th anniversary of the eruption of Mount Ontake, which had 63 dead and missing people, families and others asked climbers to gather information about volcanic activity and wear helmets.
On Mount Ontake, located on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, an eruption occurred on September 27, 2014, 11 years ago, killing 58 people and five people disappeared.
Five members of the Yamabiko Association, which is made up of the families of those who died in the eruption, handed out the handmade keychains to climbers in front of the ropeway station at the fifth station on Mt. Ontake on the morning of the 7th, calling for safe climbing measures such as gathering information about volcanic activity and wearing helmets.
The Yamabiko Association has been conducting awareness-raising activities every year at this time of year since 2021, four years ago, and will be calling at the trailhead of Mt. Ontake on September 27th, 11 years since the eruption.
A man in his 40s from Shimotsuma City, Ibaraki Prefecture said, ”When I was climbing, I looked into the eruption 11 years ago and bought a new helmet.
If there is any sign of an eruption, I’d like to run away as soon as possible.”
Sherlock Eiko, the secretariat representative of the Yamabikona Association, who lost her brother in law in the eruption, said, ”We are continuing this kind of activity with the hope that it can be useful to prevent the eruption from fading.
I hope that when an eruption occurs, you will be thinking about what you should do while climbing the mountain.”
