Prime Minister Kishida and South Korean President Yoon ”Start Shuttle Diplomacy”
South Korean President Yoon Sung-ryul visited Japan on the 16th and met with Prime Minister Kishida.
Due to deteriorating relations between Japan and South Korea, the leaders of the two countries had not met and talked outside of international conferences for the past 12 years.
In South Korea, people who were forced to work in Japanese factories during the Pacific War sued Japanese companies.
Regarding this issue, the Korean government decided last week that a Korean organization would pay instead of a Japanese company.
Regarding the South Korean government’s decision, Prime Minister Kishida said, ”I think it’s a good way to restore relations between Japan and South Korea to the way they were before.”
And he said that he would start ”shuttle diplomacy” again, in which the heads of the two countries go back and forth to talk.
Prime Minister Kishida said, ”President Yoon came to Japan and built trust and friendship.
I hope that the relationship between Japan and South Korea will progress greatly.”
