Repeated Cases of Accidental Ingestion Lead to Regulations on Sales and Manufacturing of Magnet Balls

強力きょうりょくな磁石じしゃくを使つかった「マグネットボール」と呼よばれるおもちゃを、子こどもが誤あやまって飲み込のみこむ事故じこが相次あいついでいます

Cases of accidental ingestion by children of so-called “magnet ball” toys have been occurring repeatedly.

このため経済けいざい産業さんぎょう省しょうは、ボールの直径ちょっけいがおよそ3センチ未満みまんで磁力じりょくの強つよいものについて、製造せいぞうや販売はんばいなどを規制きせいすることになりました

In an effort to address this, the Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry will impose regulations on the sales and manufacturing of balls up to three centimeters in diameter and with strong magnetic powers.

マグネットボールは、直径ちょっけい3ミリから5ミリほどの強力きょうりょくな磁石じしゃくのボールがくっついて、さまざまな形かたちに変かえることができるおもちゃで、主おもに子こども向むけに販売はんばいされています

Magnet Balls are strong magnetic ball toys between three and five centimeters in diameter. The balls are used to construct various shapes. They are intended for children.

しかし、このボールを、子こどもが誤あやまって飲み込のみこむ事故じこが相次あいついでいて、消費しょうひ者しゃ庁ちょうによりますと、2017年ねん以降いこう、11件けん報告ほうこくされ、中なかには飲み込のみこんだボールが体内たいないでくっついて、消化しょうか器官きかんに穴あなが開ひらいたケースもあるということです

However, cases of ingestion have been occurring frequently among children. According to the Consumer Affairs Agency, there were 11 such cases in 2017. In one case, ingested balls stuck together inside a child’s body and created a hole in their digestive organs.

このため、製品せいひんの安全あんぜんを所管しょかんする経済けいざい産業さんぎょう省しょうは、30日にちに審議しんぎ会かいを開ひらき、マグネットボールを法律ほうりつに基もとづいて「特定とくてい製品せいひん」に指定していし、製造せいぞうや販売はんばいなどを規制きせいする方針ほうしんを決きめました

The Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry, which oversees the safety of products, opened a commission of inquiry on January 30th. There, they designated Magnet Balls as a special product whose sales and manufacture are to be under regulation.

対象たいしょうになるのは、ボールの直径ちょっけいがおよそ3センチ未満みまんで、飲み込のみこんでしまうと体内たいないでくっつくおそれのある磁力じりょくの強つよいものです

Subject to the regulation will be balls up to three centimeters in diameter which contain strong magnetic powers and have a danger of sticking together inside the body, if ingested.

経済けいざい産業さんぎょう省しょうでは今後こんご、関連かんれんする政令せいれいの改正かいせいを閣議かくぎ決定けっていしたうえで、ことし5月つきにも規制きせいを実施じっししたいとしています

The regulation will take effect in May after the ministry revises the ordinance and it is cleared by the diet.

マグネットボールについては、消費しょうひ者しゃ庁ちょうの安全あんぜん調査ちょうさ委員いいん会かいが、誤あやま飲いんの危険きけん性せいの表示ひょうじがないまま販売はんばいされている実態じったいがあるとして、国くにに対にたいして規制きせいを行おこなうことなどを求もとめていました

The Consumer Affairs Agency’s Safety Investigation Committee requested the regulation as Magnet Balls are currently sold without any warning of possible accidental ingestion.
