Small, Slow But Steady Voted #1 Japanese Film in Kinema Junpo Top 10
On February 1st, the “Kinema Junpo Best 10,” which recognizes the top films from the previous year, selected the Sho Miyake-directed Small, Slow But Steady as the best Japanese film.
The Kinema Junpo Best 10 is organized by the movie magazine Kinema Junpo, and is the film prize with the longest history in Japan. Film critics and writers vote for the previous year’s top films.
This year’s awards were the 96th in their history. For the first time in three years, an awards ceremony was opened to attendees, with honors being given to top performers and top-voted films in several categories, including Best Japanese Film and Best International Film.
Miyake’s Small, Slow But Steady is the story of a female professional boxer facing a hearing impairment.
Miyake was also awarded the reader’s prize as top director of a Japanese film. In his acceptance speech, Miyake said, “When I was writing the scenario, cinemas were still closed and sports events were being held without spectators (due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
I wanted to capture the appeal and thrill of sports in those conditions.”
Yukino Kishii, who was awarded Best Actress for her portrayal of the main character Keiko, expressed her joy upon receiving the prize, saying, “I was honored to perform in an environment where we could progress together as a team.”
Tomokazu Miura, who plays the boxing gym’s president in the film, was honored as Best Supporting Actor.
The Top International Film prize was given to Paul Thomas Anderson’s youth romance Licorice Pizza.
The full rankings for each film category will appear in the next issue of Kinema Junpo, which goes on sale February 3rd.
