CNNによりますと、南米コロンビアのコカイン密売で「麻薬王」と呼ばれた「パブロ・エスコバル」の牧場にいたカバが11日、近くのハイウェーで車にひかれて死にました。　
According to CNN, a hippo on the ranch of "Pablo Escobar," a South American cocaine trafficker and "drug lord" in Colombia, was run over by a car on a nearby highway and killed on 11.
カバは元々、1980年代にエスコバルがコロンビア北西部のメデジン近郊にあるこの牧場に違法に持ち込んだものだということです。　
The hippos were originally brought illegally to this ranch near Medellín in northwestern Colombia by Escobar in the 1980s.
当初、カバはオス1頭とメス3頭でしたが、現在では130頭から160頭にまで繁殖し、放し飼い状態になるなど問題化しています。　
Originally, there was one male and three females, but today the hippopotamus population has grown from 130 to 160 and the free-roaming hippopotamus has become a problem.
コロンビアでは、不妊薬を投与するなど数を増やさない計画を実行してきましたが、成功しませんでした。

3月には地元政府がメキシコとインドの保護区に350万ドル、日本円でおよそ4億7000万円で70頭のカバを移送する計画を発表しています。
