The average price of rice sold at supermarkets nationwide during the week up to May 18 was 4,285 yen per 5 kilograms including tax, up 17 yen from the previous week, marking a record high for the second consecutive week.

The stockpiled rice that has been released so far is gradually entering the market, but it still has not led to a decline in the average price.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries compiles and publishes the rice sales prices at approximately 1,000 supermarkets nationwide every week.

According to this, the average price of rice sold during the week from the 12th to the 18th of this month was 4,285 yen per 5 kilograms including tax, which is an increase of 17 yen from the previous week.

It has set a new record high for two consecutive weeks since March 2022, which is three years ago for comparison purposes.

Although the average price of rice temporarily dropped from April to May, it has since continued to rise again.

Looking at the breakdown, both prices are per 5 kilograms including tax: ▼ For branded rice, which comes from a single production area and variety, the price was 4,469 yen, up 35 yen from the previous week. ▼ For blended rice, etc., which mixes various production areas and varieties including reserve rice, the price was 3,924 yen, up 29 yen from the previous week. Both have increased in price.

Since March of this year, the rice reserves released through bidding have gradually started appearing in stores, but this has not led to a decline in the average price of rice. Attention is now focused on whether the governments newly announced release of reserve rice through negotiated contracts will result in a price drop.
