China is believed to be aiming, through this summit, to strengthen its relationships with so-called Global South countries such as emerging and developing nations, with the intention of demonstrating cooperation, especially with the United States and others that it sees as mid- to long-term competitors.

President Putin speaks with President Xi Russian presidential aide Ushakov told reporters that President Putin, who is visiting China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, exchanged words with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Mr. Ushakov stated that the two discussed recent contacts between Russia and the United States, and suggested that they referred to the meeting between President Trump and President Putin held in Alaska, USA, on August 15 regarding the situation in Ukraine.

President Putin is scheduled to hold a summit meeting with President Xi in Beijing on the 2nd.
