In a study on eye treatment using iPS cells, a patient who actually received a transplant gave an interview for the first time and said they felt their vision had improved.
The group including Kobe Eye Center Hospital in Kobe City conducted a clinical study in which retinal cells made from iPS cells were processed into a string-like shape and transplanted into three patients with a severe eye disease called retinal pigment epithelium deficiency. They reported that, among these patients, one showed improvement in test values such as the ability to perceive brightness.
Ms. Megumi Saeki 62, who lives in Hyogo Prefecture and has reported improvement, said that about eight years ago she began to lose parts of her visual field and her eyesight gradually deteriorated, making it difficult to read, write, or cook, which is why she participated in the study.

The group conducted the world’s first clinical research using iPS cells for treatment 11 years ago, and including this study, has transplanted them into 10 patients with eye diseases so far. However, this is the first time a patient has agreed to be interviewed.
The group applied for this treatment to be designated as advanced medical care, which would allow public insurance to cover part of the medical costs. However, in August, the application was denied due to insufficient planning, and they plan to reapply in the future.
