As labor shortages become an issue in the retail industry, many major department stores are moving to hold their New Years sales on January 3rd next year.
Of these, Tobu Department Store has decided to delay its New Years sale, which had previously been held on January 2nd, by one day to January 3rd next year.
It will be the first time in 49 years since 1977 that the company will be closed on January 2nd, and the company says this is to improve employees working environment and enhance their quality of life and job satisfaction.
Also, Tokyu Department Store has decided to close on January 2 next year, except for some locations, and will open from the 3rd.
In addition, department stores such as Takashimaya, Daimaru Matsuzakaya, and Hankyu Hanshin have changed their first sales of the year to January 3rd starting this year, and the trend of closing on New Years Day and the 2nd is spreading.
At department stores, it has become increasingly difficult to secure staff due to challenges such as the difficulty of taking time off during the New Year holidays. Additionally, the proportion of sales from foreign tourists, who visit throughout the year, has risen, reducing the need to rely on New Year’s sales. These factors are said to be the background behind the reconsideration.
