Convenient stores are moving towards being plastic free.
Lawson, a major convenience store, announced that it will gradually change some of the containers used for boxed lunches prepares in-store to paper.
Packaging changes will affect the seafood kakiage (fried vegetable fritter) rice bowl, thickly sliced fried pork cutlet rice bowl and eleven other products.
Although the lid is plastic, the container is completely made with paper.
The movement is expected to reduce 2.5 million tonnes of plastic annually.
Family Mart is also changing to paper packaging for six products in their yogurt beverage line.
