Shunichi Kamiya, a former deputy mayor of Chiba City, was elected mayor of Chiba City for the first time after the resignation of the previous mayor.
Voting for the Chiba mayoral election has just closed and the polls will now open.
Although there has been no announcement from the Election Commission, NHK’s preliminary coverage of the situation and exit polls of those who voted on the 21st show that Mr. Kamiya is far ahead of the other two candidates.
In addition, a survey of people who voted before the deadline by March 20 showed that Mr. Kamiya outperformed other candidates and is expected to steadily increase his vote, thus ensuring his election for the first time.
Mr. Kamiya is 47 years old.
He joined the then Ministry of Home Affairs in 1996 and served as deputy mayor of Chiba City for five years from 2013, supporting the previous mayor, Mr. Toshihito Kumagai, who ensured his election as prefectural governor.
Like Mr. Kumagai, Mr. Kamiya did not receive the endorsement of a political party, but instead, received support from both the ruling and opposition parties in his campaign, and appealed to the public that he would succeed Mr. Kumagai and develop the city government.
