Groups from Kyoto University have studied whether cats can understand words.

人ひとの赤あかちゃんにことばを聞きかせて写真しゃしんを見みせると、ことばとの関係かんけいがわからないときは、写真しゃしんを見みている時間じかんが長ながくなります

If you tell a baby a word and show a picture, he/she will spend more time looking at the picture if he/she doesn’t understand the relationship with the word.

They investigated what happens to cats about it.

研究けんきゅうでは、3匹びき以上いじょう飼かっている家庭かていの猫ねこを19匹ひき集あつめました

In the study, we collected 19 domestic cats from the houses which have 3 or more cats.

まず一緒いっしょに住すむ猫ねこの名前なまえを聞きかせて、次つぎに画面がめんで別べつの猫ねこの写真しゃしんを見みせました

First I told them the names of the cats that they lived with, and then I showed a picture of another cat on the screen.

その結果けっか、名前なまえと写真しゃしんが同おなじときより、写真しゃしんを見みている時間じかんが平均へいきんで1秒びょう以上いじょう長ながくなりました

As a result, cats spend an average of more than a second looking at a photo than when the name and photo of the cats are the same.
