Growing mangoes using the heat of hot springs in cold Hokkaido.

北海道ほっかいどう音更町おとふけちょうの中川なかがわ裕之ひろゆきさんは、10年ねんぐらい前まえからマンゴーを育そだてています

Hiroyuki Nakagawa of Otofuke Town, Hokkaido has been growing mangoes for about 10 years.

今年ことしは10月がつの終おわりごろから、できたマンゴーをデパートなどに送おくっています

This year, we will be sending the finished mangoes to department stores from around the end of October.

マンゴーは暖あたたかい所ところで育そだつ果物くだものですが、音更町おとふけちょうは今いまの季節きせつ、いちばん低ひくい気温きおんが0°C以下いかの日ひが多おおくなります

Mango is a fruit that grows in warm places, but in Otofuke Town, there are many days where the lowest temperature is below 0°C this season.

このため中川なかがわさんは、近ちかくの温泉おんせんの熱ねつで温あたたかくした液体えきたいを、地下ちかのパイプに通とおして、温室おんしつの中なかを30°Cぐらいにしています

For this reason, Mr. Nakagawa uses a liquid warmed by the heat from a nearby hot spring to pass through underground pipes to keep the temperature inside the greenhouse at around 30°C.

今年ことしはいつもの年としの3.5倍ばいぐらいのたくさんのマンゴーができそうです

It looks like we’ll be able to grow 3.5 times as many mangoes as usual this year.

中川なかがわさんは「今いままででいちばん多おおくできて、うれしいです」と話はなしました

Mr. Nakagawa said, ``I’m happy that I’ve been able to do the most I’ve ever done.’’

マンゴーは、12月がつの中なかごろまで東京とうきょうのデパートや香港ほんこんに送おくります

The mangoes will be sent to department stores in Tokyo and Hong Kong until mid-December.

From around the end of October 2023 he has been sending his grown mangos to department stores.

Hence Mr. Nakagawa uses the heat from the nearby hot spring to heaten up liquid, lets it run through pipes which go underneath his greenhouse and rises the temperature up to approximately 30°C Celsius.

This year he might be able to get 3.5 times of the amount of mangos he would normally get at this time of the year.
