沖ノ鳥島の排他的経済水域内で、海洋調査を続ける中国に日本政府が抗議したことに対し、中国政府は「島ではなく岩だ」と主張しました。　
In response to the Japanese government's opposition to China's continuing to research ocean waters in the exclusive economic zone at Okino Tori-shima, the Chinese government declared "It is a rocky shore, not an island".
理由は簡単です。とても簡単です。国連海洋法条約に基づけば、沖ノ島礁は『岩礁』であり『島』ではないからです。　
The reason is simple. Really very simple. According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Okino Tori-shima is the " rocky shore", not "an island".
中国外務省は会見で沖ノ鳥島は「岩」だと主張し、「排他的経済水域や大陸棚を有するべきではない」としました。
In a press conference, China's Foreign Ministry emphasized that Okino Tori-shima was "a rocky shore", declared "this area should not have exclusive economic zone and continental shelf."
さらに、中国船の調査は「公海における調査権の履行であり、日本の事前許可を必要としない」と述べました。
Besides, China also said that the investigation of Chinese ships was "carried out with the right to investigate in international waters, didn’t need prior permission from Japan."
中国の調査船は沖ノ鳥島の排他的経済水域内で日本側の抗議にもかかわらず、同意を得ないまま活動を続けています。
Chinese investigation ships continue to operate in the Okino Tori-shima exclusive economic zone without consent, despite Japanese objections.
