キツネとガチョウ
A fox and a gaggle
むかしむかし、あるキツネが草原ヘやって来ました。
Once upon a time, a fox came to a meadow,
草原には、よく太ったガチョウのむれが座っていました。
and on the meadow, there was a gaggle.
するとキツネは、笑いながら言いました。
Then the fox laughed and said:
これはついているぞ。　これだけいれば、当分食べ物に困ることはない
"I'm so lucky. It seems not too hard to find something to eat now".
キツネに気づいたガチョウのむれは、あわれっぽく命ごいをはじめました。
Seeing the fox, the geese began to sorrow at their life.
でもキツネは、少しも聞き入れようとはしません。
But the fox pretended that he didn't hear or see anything.
命ごいをしてもむださ。　お前たちは、みんな死ぬ事に決まってるんだ
"It is useless even if you beg for a life. You guys must die."
すると一羽のガチョウが、勇気を出して言いました。
Then a goose said with courage:
わたしたちあわれな鳥どもが、この若い元気いっぱいの命をどうしても捨てなければならないのでしたら、
"If we, the poor geese, have to leave this young and energetic life,
どうかその前に、わたしたちがおいのりをする事をお許しください。
so please allow us to pray first.
みんなが罪のあるままで、死にませんように。
People cannot die when still being in sin.
それさえすみましたら、わたしたちはあなたの前に
And even if we have to,
一列にならびましょう
let us be the first one."
よかろう
"It’s OK.",
と、キツネは言いました
said the fox.
それは、もっともな事だ。
"That's a good thing.
さあ、いのるがいい。
Now, it's time to say goodbye.
ぼくはその間、待ってやろう
In the meantime, I will wait."
まず最初の一羽が、ひどく長いいのりを始めました。
The first goose started a really long prayer:
ガア、ガア、ガア、ガア・・・。
"Gaa,gaa,gaa,gaa.."
最初の一羽がなかなか終わらないので、二番目は待ち切れずに、
Because the first prayer lasted too long, the second goose could not wait
ガア、ガア、ガア、ガア・・・。
"Gaa,gaa,gaa,gaa.."
と、始めました。
and she began to pray.
それから三番目、四番目と、　それにならいました。
Then, there came the third and the fourth one began to pray.
こうしてしまいには、みんなが一緒になって、
In this way, the geese started:
ガア、ガア、ガア、ガア・・・。
"Gaa,gaa,gaa,gaa.."
と、鳴きました。
They sang together.
そして今でも、ガア、ガア、ガア、ガア・・・。と、鳴いているのです
And until now, they are still singing "Gaa,gaa,gaa,gaa.."
