80 years ago, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and babies who were exposed to radiation while in their mothers wombs suffered impaired brain development, resulting in intellectual and physical disabilities known as atomic bomb microcephaly. A photo exhibition of people with this condition has been held in Tokyo since the 2nd.
This photo exhibition is being held to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Kinoko-kai, an association made up of people with atomic bomb microcephaly and their supporters. Sixteen photographs taken by photographers Masahiko Shigeta and Kiyomi Suganuma in the 1960s and 1970s are on display.
The exhibited photographs document everyday scenes such as children with atomic bomb microcephaly helping with housework or sitting around the dining table, their lives spent hospitalized and separated from their families, and the families who continued their efforts seeking relief for the victims.
People with atomic bomb microcephaly were born with small heads due to the effects of the bombing and are referred to as the youngest survivors. Most of the photos this time had never been made public before, out of fear of discrimination and prejudice.
Mr. Naomasa Hirao, the secretary-general of the Kinoko Kai, said, Atomic bomb microcephaly is not very well known, but through projects like this, we hope people can learn about the lives of those affected and their families, and understand the impact of nuclear weapons.
The photo exhibition is being held at Gallery Kotou in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, until the 6th of this month.
