On the 2nd, four workers who were inspecting a sewer pipe in Nagano, Gyoda City, fell into a manhole, and all were later confirmed dead.

The people who died were all employees in their 50s of Sanei Kanri Kogyo, a company based in Saitama City that conducts sewer inspections and other related work.

According to the police, work began around 9 a.m. on the 2nd, and it is believed that first one person fell, and then three others who tried to help also fell one after another.

On the night of the 3rd, the company disclosed the details of the incident in writing.

According to that, the first person who fell descended into an underground area more than 10 meters deep during the 10 minutes leading up to 9:20 a.m.

At that time, the worker was not wearing any fall prevention equipment, and after hearing a loud shout from the worker who was several meters deep, another worker heard a sound like something falling into the water.

After that, the three people who went to help also were not wearing fall prevention equipment.

Also, immediately after the four people fell, the gas detector that measures the concentration of hydrogen sulfide showed a reading of over 150 ppm, which greatly exceeds the legal safety standard of 10 ppm required for safe operation.

The police are working quickly to determine the cause of death of the four people and are also investigating in detail whether there were any issues with safety management during the work.
