In order to maintain its proud status as the birthplace of K-POP, Incheon City is moving forward with plans to build a large-scale arena with a capacity of 50,000 people.

Recently, Kim Kyo-hoon, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea and chairman of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, emphasized that the lack of domestic concert infrastructure has become a serious risk to the competitiveness of the K-POP industry.

Currently, while K-POP artists are able to attract tens of thousands of fans for several days in a row overseas, even major entertainment agencies in South Korea are finding it difficult to hold large-scale tours within the country.

This reality is completely contrary to the global popularity of K-POP and indicates a lag in domestic infrastructure.

Representative Kim pointed out, Despite the increasing international value of K-content, there is still a shortage of large-scale venues in the country that can accommodate tens of thousands of people.

In order for major companies like HYBE, SM, and JYP, which have produced groups like BTS, to hold large-scale concerts in Korea, it is essential to build a K Arena that can accommodate more than 50,000 people.

Therefore, from next year, the government plans to invest 500 million won approximately 53.59 million yen to begin surveys and research for the construction of medium- and large-scale stadiums in the metropolitan area.

Representative Kim presented the following vision: “A new facility should be built in Incheon so that people coming to Korea via Incheon International Airport from all over the world can experience a K-culture complex city where performances, tourism, and consumption are integrated.”

According to this plan, four candidate sites have been proposed in the Yeongjongdo area, where Incheon International Airport is located, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has begun its review.

Representative Kim emphasized, In order to develop the domestic performance market, it is essential to build a dedicated venue with a capacity of 50,000 people. This is not only for regional development, but also for the construction of industrial infrastructure that the country should promote, and called for the need to strengthen the foundation of the nationwide K-POP industry.
