Minister Akazawa departed from Haneda Airport for Washington shortly after 10:30 a.m. on the 21st.

Prior to this, Minister Akazawa told reporters, Both the United States and our country have national interests that must be protected, so negotiations will not be straightforward. However, we would like to continue sincere and earnest discussions with vigor in order to find a point of agreement that both sides can accept.

According to government officials, the Japan-U.S. negotiations are at a stage where the American side is examining Japans proposal to reduce the U.S. trade deficit through large-scale investments from Japan and the expansion of imports of American products. Minister Akazawa wants to confirm the progress of the other sides work.
