The World Athletics Championships being held in Tokyo featured the mens marathon on the 15th, where Ryota Kondo, competing for the first time, finished as the top Japanese runner in 11th place.
34年ぶりの東京開催となった陸上の世界選手権は3日目の15日、男子マラソンが行われ、国立競技場をスタートとフィニッシュに東京の名所を巡るコースで争われました。
The World Athletics Championships, held in Tokyo for the first time in 34 years, entered its third day on the 15th with the mens marathon. The race started and finished at the National Stadium, following a course that passed by famous landmarks in Tokyo.
25歳の近藤選手は、ことし2月の大阪マラソンで、初マラソンの日本最高記録を更新する日本歴代5位の記録をマークして世界選手権初出場を果たしました。
The 25-year-old athlete Kondo made his debut at the World Championships after setting the fifth fastest time ever by a Japanese runner and breaking the national record for a first marathon at the Osaka Marathon this February.
今回が2回目のマラソンとなる近藤選手は、序盤からアフリカ勢が引っ張る先頭集団でレースを進めました。
Kondo, running his second marathon, stayed with the lead pack led by the African runners from the early stages of the race.
30キロを過ぎて集団のペースが上がる中で、いったんは離されましたが、33キロ付近で集団に追いつく粘りを見せました。
As the pace of the group increased after 30 kilometers, I was once left behind, but I showed perseverance by catching up with the group around the 33-kilometer mark.
しかし、再び、集団のペースが上がった38キロ付近で近藤選手は後退して入賞することはできず、11位でフィニッシュしました。
However, once again, when the pace of the group picked up around the 38-kilometer mark, Kondo fell behind and was unable to place, finishing in 11th.
タイムは2時間10分53秒でした。
The time was 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 53 seconds.
このほかの日本勢は、パリオリンピック日本代表で世界選手権初出場の小山直城選手が23位、日本歴代3位の記録を持つ初出場の吉田祐也選手は34位でした。
In addition, among the Japanese athletes, Naoki Koyama, who is making his debut at the World Championships as a member of Japans Paris Olympic team, finished 23rd, while Yuya Yoshida, who holds the third-best record in Japanese history and was also making his debut, finished 34th.
優勝争いはトラック勝負までもつれ込み、2人の選手がほぼ同時にフィニッシュしましたが、タンザニアのアルフォンス フェリックス・シンブ選手が2時間9分48秒で金メダルを獲得しました。
The battle for victory came down to a track finish, with two athletes crossing the line almost simultaneously, but Tanzanias Alphonce Felix Simbu won the gold medal with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 48 seconds.
