On a warm autumn day, two monks from Haguro, Chikakubō and Mankakubō, were resting by a small river in the Shonai Plain.

Since they were bored, the two of them used the sound of a horn to startle the fox sleeping on the bridge, causing it to fall into the river.

They both laughed very loudly.

After that, they were planning to climb Mt. Haguro, but even though it was daytime, the sky suddenly grew dark.

Reluctantly, since they were looking for a place to rest, they headed toward the lights of the town.

Then they discovered a house in the middle of the field.

When the landlord went out, the two were too scared to look at the coffin.

However, suddenly, the lid of the coffin opened, a white hand reached out, took one of the offered rice dumplings, and withdrew again.

They both trembled with fear.

After that, the hand kept reaching out again and again until all the cookies were gone.

Finally, a hand reached out toward the two of them, and they got scared, ran out of the house, and fell into the river.
